The birth of an enterprise
The SALARDAINE family originated in Charron, in the bay of Aiguillon, the cradle of French mussel breeding in the Charente-Maritime department. In 1958, Roger and his eight children left Charron to come as pioneers to settle at Le Vivier-sur-Mer in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. With them they brought their professionalism and their know-how, acquired over long hard years of work, by generations of mussel breeders in the Charentes.

The business flourished, and Vivier-sur-Mer has gradually become one of the very first mussel-growing centres in France, in terms of quantity (one fifth of French production), and above all for quality, with its unrivalled flavour.

The mussel bed is a breeding technique: poles are planted in straight lines 100 metres long; in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, each line consists of 100 poles, 2.50 metres high above the foreshore. In the bay, there are 322,000 poles for 271 km of mussel beds.

Armed with expertise, and anchored in family tradition, LA VIVIERE represents the third generation of mussel growers of the SALARDAINE family installed at Le Vivier-sur-Mer.
